The Los Angeles D-Fenders played host to the El Segundo Fire Department and El Segundo Police Department for a Battle of the Badges game on Sunday, Feb. 12.
The event attracted more than 200 guests in a game that preceded the D-Fenders’ contest on Sunday evening. Overall, the police and fire departments were joined by local vendors Beach Mex and King’s Cove to raise more than $4,500 for the El Segundo Education Foundation.
The exhibition-style game included food carts, merchandise vendors, a DJ booth and performances by the El Segundo High School band and cheerleading squads, while the D-Fenders also held a raffle for an autographed Lakers basketball. All proceeds went towards the non-profit organization.
Team Fire held a lead throughout the game, before Team Police surged back to take a 43-32 win in the fourth quarter.
The event, held for the first time in 2017, is expected to become an annual fundraiser for the El Segundo community.
Established in 1983, the El Segundo Education Foundation aims to provide sustainable and consistent funding directly to the public schools of the El Segundo Unified School District, according to the organization’s website.
