The Lakers might be a worldwide brand, but they are loyal to the city of El Segundo, where they have been headquartered for 17 years.
The El Segundo Chamber of Commerce acknowledged the organization’s accomplishments on Wednesday, bestowing the city’s 2017 Business of the Year Award upon the Los Angeles and South Bay Lakers.
South Bay President Joey Buss and South Bay General Manager Nick Mazzella represented the Lakers at the awards dinner on Wednesday.
Mazzella said that it meant a lot hearing the city’s business leaders speak with pride about having the Lakers in El Segundo.
“You hear how much the Lakers really mean to them,” Mazzella said. “The fact that this huge brand in the world is located right here in El Segundo. It’s not just a successful business — it’s a brand that so many people are proud of and passionate about.”
The Lakers and El Segundo will remain intertwined for years to come, as the team moved a couple blocks into its new headquarters, the UCLA Health Training Center, just a few weeks ago.
“When the Lakers decided it was time to build a new facility, there was no doubt we were staying in El Segundo,” Mazzella said. “This is home.”
