South Bay Shakes off Home Blues for Win Over Memphis

EL SEGUNDO – The South Bay Lakers got the best of the Western Conference’s top team as they beat the Memphis Hustle, 127-119, on Saturday night to break a four-game home losing streak. Pierre Jackson scored 22 points and Talen Horton-Tucker finished with 21 points to guide South Bay (12-21) to the win. Shaq Buchanan scored a game-best 36 points for Memphis (24-10) in the loss.

The two teams went back and forth in the first quarter, but the Hustle held a slight 31-25 lead after one thanks to nine points in the frame from Buchanan. South Bay was able to take the lead at the half, 63-58, as Devontae Cacok and Horton-Tucker combined for 14 points in the second quarter.

Jackson had the hot hand in the third quarter, as he helped the home team take a 96-85 lead into the final frame with eight points in the third. Buchanan exploded for 17 points in the fourth quarter for Memphis, but the Lakers were able to use a balanced scoring effort to hold on and grab the win.

Buchanan’s big night paced the Hustle, while three other players finished with 21 points. Ahmad Caver tallied 21 points and eight assists, Marquis Teague recorded 21 points and Jarrod Uthoff notched a 21-point, 17-rebound double-double.

Jackson’s team-high 22 points led the Lakers, as the point guard also recorded five rebounds, eight assists and one steal. Horton-Tucker registered his fifth double-double of the season with 21 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and a steal. South Bay’s two-way players each also recorded a double-double as Kostas Antetokounmpo finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds and Cacok had 12 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. David Stockton scored 18 points to go along with two rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Wayne Selden Jr. had 14 points to lead the second unit. Reggie Hearn (12 points) and Marcus Allen (10 points) also finished the game in double figures.

South Bay will play their last game before the break on Wednesday, February 12 at 7:00pm when they host the Salt Lake City Stars from the UCLA Health Training Center.
