Hood-Schifino’s Game Winner Rescues South Bay

The South Bay Lakers played in their tenth NBA G League regular season game against the Greensboro Swarm as they won 117-116, on Saturday night. Skylar Mays led the Lakers (7-3), in scoring with 29 points. Amari Bailey paced the Swarm (3-7), scoring 24 points.

The first quarter was very evenly matched. South Bay jumped out to an early lead before the Swarm were able to go a run of their own to tie the game. Two-way player Skylar Mays led the way for the Lakers in the first with six points. South Bay led 26-22 after one.

A nice connection between Mays and Shaq Harrison enabled South Bay to build a nine-point lead with seven minutes remaining in the second period. South Bay continued to surge to close the half, as Colin Castleton and Maxwell Lewis both found their way into the action. The Lakers led at the half 57-50.

A quick 9-0 run from the Swarm enabled them to storm all the way back and take a two-point lead just two minutes into the second half. The Lakers regained control however, taking a 10-point lead into the final frame, 93-83.

After seemingly being in control, the Swarm put together a nice stint in the final frame to cut the lead to just three with five minutes remaining. Both teams continued to trade blows until Amari Bailey hit two clutch free throws to put the Swarm up one with six second remaining. Jalen Hood-Schifino made a driving layup on the ensuing possession to put South Bay up one and eventually win the game, 117-116.

Mays put together a final line of 29 points, five rebounds, seven assists, and two steals in 32 minutes. Hood-Schifino added 12 points and six assists while Colin Castleton added 17 of his own to go along with 10 rebounds and four assists. For the Swarm, Bailey scored 24 points and dished out seven assists while RJ Hunter and Jaylen Sims both put up 23 points. 

South Bay will face off against the Stockton Kings on Monday, Jan. 22 at 7:00pm from the UCLA Health Training Center.
