The South Bay Lakers completed their year-long adoption of Edison Elementary School in Torrance, Calif. Los Angeles and South Bay Lakers staff worked to create a more vibrant and welcoming environment for students, teachers, and staff. This included renovating the staff lounge and front entry, along with painting new planters and bookshelves.
South Bay Lakers Head Coach Zach Guthrie, along with assistant coaches Alex Cerda, Perry Huang and Mo Charlo, also assisted in the project. The Lakers provided new tables and chairs, appliances and kitchen supplies along with new signage and decor to update the teachers’ lounge. New planters with fresh succulents and signage adorn the entry to the Edison Elementary campus.
“The South Bay Lakers are proud to support our community as we complete our year-long adoption of Edison Elementary,” said Guthrie. “The Lakers organization takes pride in making a positive impact on our community. We updated the teachers’ lounge with new furniture, appliances and supplies to create a more welcoming and supportive space for teachers and staff. We’re excited for the students to see the refreshed entry when the school year starts again in the fall.”
In October 2024, the South Bay Lakers held a Fan Fest in which more than 100 students participated in a health and fitness clinic led by South Bay players and coaching staff, a basketball skills challenge sponsored by Toyota and dance activities led by the Laker Girls. Throughout the 2024-25 NBA G League season, students also attended South Bay Lakers games. The Lakers donated basketballs and a Wilson cart to Edison Elementary to encourage students to continue developing their skills while enjoying the game of basketball.
