South Bay Suffers Narrow Road Defeat

Edinburg, Texas (March 3, 2022) – In a back-and-forth game at the Bert Ogden Arena, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (16-5) defeated the South Bay Lakers (12-7) 115-111 on Thursday night.

The Lakers got off to a hot start as the team started on a 12-0 run, and South Bay led by as many as 17 points in the first quarter with a score of 27-10. The Vipers tried to gain momentum but were slowed down by the Lakers as South Bay took a 33-22 lead at the end of the first.

South Bay led for the majority of the second quarter, but with 6:05 remaining on the clock Gerald Green obtained a rebound from a missed Vipers shot and managed to give RGV their first lead of the game. The Lakers fought back and held a 56-55 advantage at the half.

The Vipers were on a hot streak in the third quarter and led by as many as 10 points in the frame. South Bay edged in on the Vipers, but it was not enough to take the lead away from the home team as the Vipers came out on top with a 115-111 victory.

Los Angeles Lakers two-way player Mason Jones led South Bay with 22 points, six rebounds and six assists. Chaundee Brown Jr. totaled 20 points and six rebounds. Both Mac McClung (eight rebounds) and Paris Bass (10 rebounds) recorded 17 points each. Jemerrio Jones was just shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Jay Huff finished the night with 13 points and six rebounds.

The South Bay Lakers.are back in action tomorrow night at the Bert Ogden Arena with a rematch against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
